I've been studying, studying, and more studying. Being a capsuleer seems like a pretty dangerous life were it not for the virtual immortality. I am starting to get the basics of how to pilot a ship down pretty well. I can fly most of the small, inexpensive ships of my race as well as some larger ones. Of course by flying I mean I have studied the control panels and could sit in the cockpit of one and move it. For now I have two options:
1) Stay in the safest possible places while I study.
2) Fly something super inexpensive until I learn more about this whole capsuleer thing.
For the last few days I have chosen the latter. I have been flying around in a little Ibis. I studied up on just a couple of pieces of equipment. I don't use most of them yet because they are too expensive, but I do use an afterburner and a pair of salvagers. Perhaps if I am unarmed and in a ship that cannot carry too much I won't be too much of a target? So far it has worked. Just yesterday I started to get a little bld in my cheap and totally unarmed ship and left empire space. As soon as I went through the last gate out of empire space I saw a rather large wreck in front of me. I didn't see anyone nearby so I headed toward the wreck and turned on my salvagers. I don't know what a strategic cruiser is, but I do know that that particular one gave me salvage worth so much that I had to sell it in multiple batches because the bloody brokers were charging too much. Why can't they just take it from the proceeds when they already have a buyer lined up? In any case, in one cycle of a salvager I went from 400,000 isk to 160,000,000 isk so I can't complain.
Figuring out what to do with the sudden windfall was entertaiment enough to last me the rest of the night. It was tempting to buy a fancy expensive ship and learn how to fy it quickly, but a steady stream of people parading out of the clone vats in Arnon made me hold up on that. Instead I learned about these implant things that will help me learn faster. Knowledge seems to be valuable to a capsuleer so I got myself a good set of those and a couple to help out my afterburner too since it seems to be one of my best buddies right now. Finally I grabbed a couple more books to round out the expenditures. There are a few ships I have my eye on and am well on my way to being able to fly them.
About that, I have been hearing about explorers who find all sorts of valuable stuff at random spots throughout space. I learned a little bit about how that works and fell in love. Shortly thereafter I learned that finding the good stuff means again leaving the safety of empire space, a taller order now that I have 55,000,000 in isk impanted in my body. It takes some getting used to. Those things are a bit uncomfortable when I think about them, but I have already seen how much better I comprehend things with them. Anyhow, back to exploring. After a little more study and a little conversation with other pilots I learned that I could explore from a cloaked ship, so now I want to explore AND run covert ops. I also want to be able to fly a little bigger ship to clear any darn pirates out if I stumble into a nest of them so I want to explore and run overt ops and fly something roughly on the scale of a battle cruiser. And in my down time mining sounds relaxing in short bursts. I hear there is a Cruiser called an Osprey that is useful for that without a lot of comitment since I am already reaching for a lot. Better yet, I was quickly able to understand how to fly it and use the mining equipment so I used part of the 100,000,000 isk left from my salvage to buy one.
So as of right now I am mining in an osprey and taking my Ibis out for salvaging runs. The salvaging runs are by far the more profitable. I am also looking for a low security area to call home in the not-too-distant future while I study how to do the covert exploration and how to fly a small war ship of some type. I won't actually move until I at least have the basics of that down. It has also occured to me, after I have accomplished all of this, that I might expand on the covert ops to do some bombing and eventually get certified in field generation so I could eventually offer to help out something bigger than myself, a corporation or something. That will be a while as I first want to be able to enjoy the spoils of my own labor. Also the stack of books I need to read is awful tall even before adding that...
